Greetings, Midwest Mafia!
My name is Iman Davenport, and I am grateful to serve as your Midwest Regional Chair! On behalf of the Regional Board, I am excited to work with you to create initiatives and programming that are not only beneficial to you but positively impact your experiences in law school and with MWBLSA. MWBLSA is one of the largest regions of the National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA), spanning 15 states with over 30 active chapters. As one of the largest regions, I plan to touch every corner by planning and attending sub-regional events as well as ensuring the concerns of our members in every state are addressed. This year our Academic and Leadership Retreat will be in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where I plan to create a schedule that highlights every step of our law school careers from the beginning of 1L year to planning for graduation as well as events that allow leadership to better prepare for the upcoming school year. Stay tuned for developments surrounding our 55th Regional Convention!
We truly find ourselves at a crossroads. Guaranteed rights are under attack. Acts of discrimination and racism are playing out more frequently at law schools and campuses across the country. Sadly, Black attorneys continue to make up a small percentage of the legal field. As current law students, we have faced a global pandemic and have had to overcome countless obstacles. As we return to in-person activities, I vow to re-energize our region and remind everyone exactly who we are. Consequently, this year’s theme is: “Emergence Through Reinvigoration: A Pathway Forward”
I believe in the mission of this organization and have been a fortunate beneficiary since I first started law school. MWBLSA has served as a safe space, a center for networking and academic support, and at its core, a family for all of us who face the difficult and trying struggles of law school. I can promise you this – my top priority will be to ensure that all these needs are met so MWBLSA can continue to impact our law school experiences profoundly. I vow to be resilient, responsive and lead MWBLSA with pride. I will be accessible, and I will work to carry on the legacy of this great association. If you would like to connect with MWBLSA, please feel free to reach out to me at midwest@nblsa.org.
