Hello Midwest Mafia!
My name is Kennedy Jones, and I am ecstatic to serve as your Midwest Regional Chair! One of the largest regions in the nation, the Midwest Region of the National Black Law Student Association (NBLSA) is comprised of 15 states with over 30 active chapters and has developed 56 years' worth of rich history and culture. During my tenure as the Midwest Regional Chair, I — along with the talented individuals on my Regional Board — aspire to continue the positive work of the historical boards before us. With that aspiration in mind, I have chosen this year's theme to be:
“Empower the Vision: Continuing the Legacy & Building the Future"
The Midwest Region has elevated over the past year, and this year we aim to continue that upward growth. Our goal is to increase participation and reconnect the region; establish long lasting partnerships creating job opportunities, scholarship, and reoccurring sponsorship; as well as an increase in programming on all levels including chapter, regional, and national. During this term, we will also say goodbye to Kentucky, and welcome Colorado into the Midwest Mafia.
At this time, it's more important than ever to establish a strong regional relationship with Black law student. During the pandemic and shortly after the lives of Black folks were on display, arguably one of the foremost issues in an American culture. That conversation sparked DEI initiatives, job posts, and the reconfiguration of mission statements. That spotlight propelled firms, companies, schools, into action, and to make very public stands on the issue. But at this time, we find ourselves standing on the cusp of a moment, where we've found DEI initiatives to be hallow and change to be slow moving. MWBLSA is here to propel that change and assist the chapters in their work in supporting their student population.
MWBLSA has served as a family, a center for networking and academic support. My top priority will be to ensure that the needs of the chapters and the region are met, and that MWBLSA can continue supporting our members in an impactful way. I will be accessible, and I will work to carry on the legacy of this great association. If you would like to connect with MWBLSA, please feel free to reach out to me at [email protected]
